after several nights at sziget, yours truly caught a cold. ok, had a cold before that, but had been successfully ignoring it. yours truly went to see a doctor, and got, besides a new inhaler and some good antibiotics, something to help with another problem i apparently have:

(which the doctors here are not afraid to prescribe, unlike the germans, who kept giving me penicillin, which is about as effective as al gore.)

the move went well, more or less as planned even if that planning was somewhat last minute.

it's totally impossible to rent a moving van and drive it into eastern europe. the insurance companies for the rental firms simply dont allow it. it's also, for some unknown reason, totally impossible to rent a car in western europe and return it in eastern europe, although all the same rental car companies exist in both places, and dont mind if you do it the other way around. these restrictions were identical for every single rental car company. so finally i rented a large minivan (not considered a moving van) and found someone (thanks i.!) to drive with, and then bring the thing back. it was a rather cool nissan thingy, and we only got one parking ticket (which i'll happily pay if they're clever enough to track me down). remove from that list of totally impossible things, however, moving faster than the speed of light.

k., m., and i. drove down to budapest with me, we stashed my stuff in an apartment for a couple days while i looked for an apartment (a flat, rather), toured around a little, they helped me move my stuff, and after a short but sweet parting, were off back to the land of brezel&bier.

for the metro one can get a monthly pass, which i promptly did, a little square of paper with some pretty foil on it. the kontrollers got me the next day, a round woman with rudimentary english ("ticket", "fine", "pay", "now") stopped me and i showed this little thing, and then she asked me for my transit passport. i shrugged because i had no idea what she was talking about, so she offered the suggestion, "what will we do now?" which was understood, along with the subsequent minute of silence, to mean that she wanted a little cash, but there was no way i was going to bribe a nasty controller, and especially still not knowing what for. after reaching impatience w/ my (willful) ignorance, she showed me the photo booth and indicated i needed to make a photo, but by chance i had one with me, and thus only needed to have it riveted, at the lavish expense of $0.75, to a piece of thin cardboard with a number on it. i think she said it's good for 10 years. thanks were warmly sent, if not received, and i went merrily on my way.

the last two weeks are a blur of work and running about. i still have a ton of unanswered emails (sorry), and am working on that, really.
